July 29, 2009 · Leave a Comment

The Equal Opportunity (Miscellaneous) Amendment Bill 2008 was passed in the South Australian Parliament July 14th 2009 and will come into effect at a date to be fixed. Among the amendments is one that makes it illegal to refuse to sell goods and services, including education, to a breastfeeding mother. Another amendment protects against discrimination on the grounds of sexuality, although religious schools are exempt. Anti-discrimination on the basis of religious dress such as burqas and head scarves is also included as well as a broadening of the scope of the sexual harassment laws.

New Novels by Feminist Authors

April 28, 2008 · Leave a Comment

New books by two Australian feminist authors, namely Helen Garner and Geraldine Brooks have recently been published. Both being writers of fiction and non-fiction, these most recent works are novels. The titles are “The Spare Room” by Helen Garner and “People of the Book” by Geraldine Brooks.

Our library holds several titles by these women, including, by Geraldine Brooks “Nine Parts of Desire: the Hidden World of Islamic Women” and “The First Stone: Some Questions about Sex and Power” by Helen Garner, a controversial book about two sexual harassment cases at Melbourne Uni in the nineties. Related to this are two more titles in our library collection. They are “Bodyjamming” edited by Jenna Mead and “Generation f: Sex, Power and the Young Feminist” by Virginia Trioli. These women oppose Helen Garner’s views about third wave feminists as expressed in “The First Stone ” and their books are responses to it and the debate that grew as a result.
